The right lubricant

Lubricants are usually either water-based or silicone-based. Both types can be used together with condoms and have product-specific advantages and disadvantages.

  • Silicone lubricating gels are a bit more expensive, and not everyone is comfortable with them due to their "greasy" consistency. On the other hand, they are particularly slippery for a long time and are therefore very economical to use. Due to the optimal gliding properties, we recommend these types for anal intercourse. Anal sex without lube can be painful and even cause injury.
  • Water-based lubricating gels are particularly skin-friendly and are easily absorbed by the skin. But this means that more lube is needed, especially for longer traffic. When using dental dams or female condoms, the use of water-based lubricants is recommended if lubrication is needed.

There are also oil-based lubricants on the market. These lubricants must not be used with latex condoms or dams. The oil makes latex brittle and can therefore tear more easily. For this reason, we strongly advise against using Vaseline, butter, cooking oil, baby oil, massage oil and other oils and fats as a substitute for lubricating gel.

Latex free condoms and dams made of polyurethane and AT-10, on the other hand, can also be used with lubricants containing fat or oil without having to fear any negative consequences. These plastics do not become porous either through grease or through oil.

Lubricants and oral sex

Lube is actually available in many different flavors: from strawberry to melon to macadamia nuts. Of course, lubricating gel is not absolutely necessary for oral sex, but creative lovers appreciate these delicacies. The big advantage: these lubricating gels are of course harmless when taken orally.

Lubricants and Toys

Every lubricant can be used for every toy? Unfortunately not. Silicone toys should not be used with silicone lubricant, but with water-based types. If in doubt, ask the manufacturer which type of lube is compatible with your toys.

For smaller toys, we recommend a thin lubricant that spreads very well over the toy. With larger toys, a particularly effective lubricant (e.g. a lubricant cream) should be used to avoid injuries.

Lubricant and the female body

Many women will know from their own experience. Vaginal moisture is influenced by many factors: hormones, intimate hygiene, diet, etc.

Sexual intercourse with insufficient moisture can be uncomfortable, sometimes even painful. With a pleasant lubricating gel of your choice, sex becomes a pleasant experience again.

Such problems are very common during menopause or after pregnancy. Quite a few women even experience pathological vaginal dryness in the course of their lives. Your gynecologist will be happy to advise you on this.

Women who want to have children should know that conventional lubricating gels have a negative impact on fertility. Although lubricating gels are pH-neutral, the optimum pH value for fertilization is 7.2. A special lubricating gel for couples who want to have children also has the ideal osmotic properties so that sperm can reach the cervix.
